Faber makes huge announcement: high scorers to be compensated more

Patrick Faber

But there was an announcement by Minister Patrick Faber that students and parents will be pleased to know. The award for the Open Scholarship has been upped by a hundred and fifty percent and as for the prof and tech scholarships, the top recipient will also benefitting substantially.

Patrick Faber, Minister of Education

“Each year, the most outstanding candidate in the CAPE exams is awarded the Belize scholarship. And I’ll tell you something about the Belize Scholarship that is new this year; that I’m sure that the recipient and his family—especially his mom would be very pleased to hear. In previous years, the award for the Belize Scholarship was a maximum of eighty thousand Belize dollars and since our discussions last year, I’m pleased to report this morning that I had the cabinet approval to bump up the scholarship to a maximum of two hundred thousand Belize dollars, up to two hundred thousand Belize dollars. It doesn’t mean you get to carry home the money in the suitcase. It simply means that if you choose a school that you can spend this money on, you’ll be able to pay up to that. If you choose a school that costs a hundred thousand that’s what you will get.  There are scholarships called the prof and tech scholarships for instance that we give and we give hundreds of thousands of dollars—far more than the top performer—and we simply did not think that we could continue in line with that. So we have up it and again that award can go up to two hundred thousand Belize dollars and our recipient this year will be the first recipient to receive under these new regulations.  I also wish to announce this morning in order to make sure that more people gun for these high number of CXCs that we will be giving a five thousand dollar grant to every student who takes the CSEC exams and makes fifteen passes or higher—a five thousand dollar grant towards their studies wherever they decide to go. So we want more of our students to gun for these numbers.”
