Weekend Wrap Up with James Adderly

Good evening I’m James Adderly and this is Sports Monday. Week nine in the Belikin Cup brought the impressive Paradise Freedom Fighters of Toledo to the MCC Grounds yesterday for its second meeting with FC Belize as the second half of the PBL season continues to roll. However, at the hometown looking to strike first when this ball from off the right wing rolls across the goal mouth but Kevin Lino can’t make the connection. At the other end the two man game between Alexander Peters and Franz Vernon forces Glendford Chimilio out of his goal. Vernon gets the better of the battle for possession but Shannon Flowers rescues his keeper. Around the twelfth minute. Stephen Polonio makes the initial stop on this play and the rebound reaches Mark “Kello” Leslie who buries it into the back of the net for the 1 – zip lead. Meanwhile it’s more determined Freedom Fighters who come out in the second half. Jordy Polanco deals to Ashley Torres whose left foot bounce is kept out of the goal by goalkeeper Chimilio who really didn’t know a whole lot about it. Its more heroics from the FC keeper when Lisbey Castillo fires this left foot at goal that Chimilio digs out of harm’s way. Paradise is in the ascendency when Castillo deals to Franz Vernon who punches this ball in the far corner to force the 1 – 1 score. Folks this is the last play of the match and the PG team gets to win it off this set place that finds Alexander Peters who is denied by the goalkeeper. Paradise Freedom Fighters and FC Belize settle for the 1 – 1 tie. In other results from the weekend Verdes blanked the Belize Defense Force 2 – zip while San Ignacio bolted the Belmopan Bandits by that same score. Meanwhile folks the UNCAF U-16 Tournament hosted by the Football Federation of Belize concluded on Friday and Belize’s performance was dismal despite the promising start with a 2 – nil win over Nicaragua. El Salvador then blanked the Baby Jaguars 2 – zip, Guatemala came up with a 3 – 2 scorcher over boys. Honduras continued the punishment with a 1 –z ip blast on the national team. Friday night against Costa Rica. Team Belize looked absolutely ragged against Costa Rica while absorbing a 4 – nil punch. Folks our team scored 4 times and gave up 10 in five outings. In the meantime Guatemala, Costa Rica and El Salvador all finished with 10 points each from the single round robin featuring six Central American nations. The winner was determined by the best goal average among the three from games played against each other in the head to heads play; Guatemala emerged the champion despite losing 2 – 1 to Costa Rica who also had a better goal differential. We will say that the F.F.B. did a poor job of rallying the nation to support the U-16 team and indeed our team was not well prepared. Blame it on the money but it doesn’t change the facts. Turning to the Inter District Competition which features sixteen teams. Mavericks doubled United in a 4 – 2 score and MGM Steelers punched PG Police in a 4 – nil blowout. Hope Creek shut down Roaring Creek 5 – 1 while Green Gold and San Martin FC settled for a 1 – 1 tie. Zone 3 play saw Ebony Tale and Renaird battle to a 3 – 3 finish with Boom Bombers and Georgeville Strikes will meet tonight at the MCC Grounds. Over in zone 4 Progresso captures Ranchito Warriors 2 to nothing and San Estevan tamed Loo Lobos with a 5 – nil trashing. Checking in the Smart Mundialito Brown Bombers came up with a 3 – zip dubbing of Survivors on Saturday schedule. Sherwin Aguirre opened the scoreboard and then added a second for a 2 goal output and then Tyrich Muschamp scored to make it a 3 – nil final. City Boys then came out against Third World top hand them a set of 2 – 0 defeat. Akeem Sutherland scored the first goal and then Kenroy Linares added another for the 2 – nil W. The match between Ladyville Rising Stars and Collet Strikers ended in a scoreless stalemate. In softball news the first Emma Flores Softball Tournament was launched unsteady with 3 games at the Carmelita Village. Red Orchids  walloped San Estevan 8 – 1, Northern Eagles gobbled up Guinnea Grass in a 12 – 2 affair and Carmelita crushed Caledonia Originals win a 15 – 5 result. Finally folks live International Amateur Boxing comes alive this Saturday, November 30th at the Hour Bar Compound in an exciting 11 fight card headlined by over 2 bronze medalists from the Central America Championships 2013. Sherman Galvez and Max Williams and of course Belize’s first lady of boxing the inimitable Pauline Reneau. It’s an event for the whole family.
