PM says salary increase will take effect in July 2014

Dean Barrow

Discussions on a salary increase for teachers and public officers, so very loud earlier in the year, have apparently been muted. The unions appeared deflated in the face of government’s hard line that there is no money in the coffers. After public statements by the Prime Minister that government’s coffers are now overflowing with millions and millions and millions of dollars, the unions woke up and have now been agitating for that salary increase, although somewhat quietly. Today the Prime Minister stated that the raise will come in 2014, guaranteed. But he chastised the unions for their impatience and their impudence.

Dean Barrow, Prime Minister

“All the spending that we are doing does not affect the increased revenue that government is already seeing during this fiscal year. What we had said to the unions’ negotiating team is that for sure you will get your raise next year because there is no doubt that the formula which we have proposed, that is that they get fifty cents of every dollar of increased recurrent revenue will yield them a significant salary increase. Nobody can predict with certainty the extent of the increases but the wind is at our backs. We just had the court case resolved partially in our favor that saw government getting some of the Telemedia dividends…I think seven and a half million dollars – that is a recurrent revenue increase that goes into the pot along with the increases we get because of the takeover of the IMMARBE registry. So the teachers and the public officers can rest assured that salary increase there will be. But Lord man, I have to appeal to the unions…please…that is what we put to you, I thought we pretty much had an agreement. Now is not the time to say we demand that you give the increase now in the middle of the financial year and we demand that there be a floor. Look at what is happening to the entire country as a consequence of the calamity that has overtaken us. Look at what the government has to do for all the people of this country, and even as a matter of solidarity, please be patient and please wait for the trigger date that we already agreed when you will absolutely get your salary increase.”

PM Barrow says the increase will take effect in July, after they examine the entire revenue stream. But it will be retroactive to April first.

Impudence? Really? You are a servant of the people you are not a god! If the people do not like what you are doing (and many are disappointed in your leadership) and they say so how do you mean impudence? People are tired of all the crap that is going on!

  3. CEO says:

“government’s coffers are now overflowing with millions and millions and millions of dollars”

in your dreams, the corruption officers got that a long time ago. Overflowing? more like a trickle.
Read the wikileaks, Belize is 7 days away from insolvency not able to make payroll.

Assuming Ali Baba is still PM in July, got to wonder what his royal BS will be then.

The GOB is in debt to the tune of over $575 million and “Nero” Barrow fiddles while Belize burns.
He is as good, if not better, than Obama at telling lies. You can tell Barrow is lying when his lips move. Just read what Moody’s says about Belize https://www.moodys.com/research/Moodys-Debt-overhang-will-continue-to-constrain-Belizes-sovereign-rating–PR_272252 Then weigh it against what Barrow tells the mindless masses in Belize. The world is laughing at you PM.

The pm is really good at distracting desperate people. So now everybody thinking about and waiting for july. Everybody will really forget about the corruption. Sad that we reach this point. The pm forget about all the other people out here who are not public officers and we still suffering a bad economy, no job and plenty suffering. I wonder what he can do to distract us?
