Lisa Shoman files motion for senate inquiry in immigration scandal

Francis Fonseca

The last Senate meeting held on November sixth ended in some confusion and tension. Opposition Senator Lisa Shoman moved a motion for a senate inquiry into the ongoing immigration scandal. The vote was deadlocked at six, with representatives from the Opposition, church, union and private sector aligned on one side, and government senators on the other. The confusion arose after President of the Senate Mark Pech voted to break the deadlock. Senator Shoman claimed that according to the constitution, Pech did not have a casting vote. Leader of Government business Godwin Hulse moved for the adjournment anyway and that was that. But Senator Shoman is doing it all again. New Five has confirmed that Shoman has written to Clerk of the National Assembly Eddie Webster announcing her intent to bring the motion again at the next sitting. Today PUP Leader Francis Fonseca told News Five that the party will keep trying even though there is little room for optimism.

Francis Fonseca, PUP Leader

“Senator Lisa Shoman has in fact filed a second motion in respect of the immigration scandal and seeking to have a senate inquiry investigation into that matter. I just received it this morning so I haven’t looked at it in great detail. It has been sent to the clerk and it is said to come upon the eighteenth, so she will again attempt to raise that issue and as far as I understand she has again received the support of the social partners in doing so. That is such an important matter that we have to keep trying, we have to keep trying and give the government an opportunity to come on board and to support and independent inquiry into this matter. There is still too many unanswered question. So it is still an ongoing matter and we applaud Senator Shoman for the work that she is doing. Well if the government obviously made it clear they have no interest in a senate inquiry. I don’t expect Mr. Hulse to behave any differently and I don’t expect the president of the Senate to act any differently. They are under instructions from their leader so yes there is good reason for me not to have any optimism that it is going to work. But we have to demonstrate to the people that we are serious that we are trying and let them understand very clearly that the only reason today in this country that we are not having an independent senate investigation into this scandal which involves U.D.P. senators, is because of the U.D.P. government, Mr. Barrow and the UDP government.”

A meeting of the House of Representatives is scheduled for this Friday, and the Senate will meet early next week.

Ali Baba and his forty thieves say not so fast.

The investigation is done, no crime shall be proven.
The books are cooked, you can’t catch them if you tried.

Sleeping puppies are dogs that can’t hunt.
Why have they not started recalls on ALL the UDP representatives?
Stop this government in its tracks.

And the government of Belize is a runaway train run by criminals.

Stay on their @)$&)$& Lisa! We cannot let them sweep their corruption under the rug. Why hasn’t the FIU taken action against them. Confiscate their illegal gains. It is is simple enough process. Oh yeah, I forgot, the FIU is controlled by the politicians in power.

This only makes the party look bad – we need to focus on the real issues

Let me give a word of advise instead of fooling around get on the streets and interview people on a weekly basis and show the nation all the different struggles people have on a daily basis instead of taking a bunch of nonsense.

Da Belizeans unu di deal with yo know da Immigration thing long gone

We di behave just like the UDP who is still holding on to the superbond as an excuse.

Lets move on and deal with real issues – until then we will forever be the opposition

The next thing we are bigging up Cordel Hyde and thats make the party look weaker

We already said we didn’t need him now we are begging him to come back
