Cops get charged for shaking down Tyrell Hyde

Tyrell Hyde

On September eighth, Belmopan resident Tyrell Hyde was allegedly shaken down by Police officers who stopped and searched his vehicle. Hyde claimed that money was stolen from him, and then he was taken to an Atlantic Bank ATM, forced by Police officers to withdraw money, and then jacked. It was all caught on tape, and with that video evidence available, it only took three months and the intervention of the Ombudsman’s office to charge two officers. On Wednesday, Police Corporal Reymundo Requeña and Police Constable Edgar Teul were arraigned in Belmopan before Magistrate Clive Lino. Requeña was charged with harm and theft of seventy dollars. He and Edgar Teul were also jointly charged for theft of two hundred and sixty dollars. Today Tyrell Hyde told News Five that he is confident of his case, even though it took a long time to get to this point. And there’s still the matter of the money which was stolen from him.

Tyrell Hyde, Shaken Down By Police

“I’ve met with the DPP earlier and again they discussed everything but compensation or how I’m going to recover my money.

“This happened over a month after you had initially filed a report against the officer, and you had come to the media out of frustration because you didn’t think that anything much would have come out of it. The officers have now been charged, what are your feelings about the case or about the strength of the case?

Tyrell Hyde

“I am confident of course that it will be a wining case for me. But the duration that they took to charge these officers, definitely with all I am happy that they have been charge but I definitely feel that it could have been a lot earlier.”

“Have you come under intimidation at all by other members of the police department since you have been pushing this case?”

“Prior to conducting my ID parade, I was called, basically a death threat, that if I show up to any effing ID parade I wa dead. So, as I got that phone call I immediately went over to the DDP’S office and I left the number that I got the calls from. I went also to B.T.L. and informed Mr. Rivero of the phone call. Beside that so far thank God that you know nothing, no other threats or that nobody else has been harassing me so far. It is a land line number, it’s 2029003 if I remember correctly that is the number.”

Both officers were granted bail of four thousand dollars, and will return to court on February eleventh, 2014.

I hope every member of the public realizes that this is a ordeal you won’t even wish on your own worst enemy to be robbed by police. It is better to be robbed by a civilian because when it is the police the robbery is almost legal! While going through an ordeal like this I imagine my son had to dreadfulluy wonder if after taking his money what next? Are these police going to take me somewhere and KILL me? Are these police going to PLANT something on me and wrongfully charge me? Those agonizing thoughts are the WORST part of an ordeal of this nature. Then losing your money is secondary but very important if it cripples your basic livelyhood. I hope this nightmare comes to an end and my son gets JUSTICE!!!

So are the officers suspended from duty until this case is over? The police also mentioned that they are “looking” for two other officers involved. Does that mean these officers are in hiding?
