Trial on the murder of Aubrey Lopez before the courts

On May twelfth 2010 popular basket-baller Aubrey Lopez was abducted and then brutally murdered, shot in the head and then pushed from his own car in Belize City. Five days after Police charged the man who they say killed Lopez. Then twenty-two, Belize City resident Paul Jex was fingered by a minor who was allegedly in the vehicle when it happened. The minor told Police that Jex shot Lopez and then pushed him from the car on Prince Street. It’s been a long time in coming, but since Tuesday the case has been before the courts. Lopez’s family, including his father Mayor of Belmopan Simeon Lopez, has been making the trek to court. He says that while it is bringing back painful memories, it is something they have to do.

“It’s like rehashing the wounds all over again, but it is something that I have made up my mind that I need to come here and get some sort of closure or disclosure on whatever happened on that fateful night. We are still not too sure of what had happened or how it happened. We hope that with this trial now we will be able to get some light as to what actually happened on that night. So we can only depend on the witnesses and the police report; put them together and see if we can make sense of what had happened that night. It is just reopening some wounds, but I guess after four years, we’ve been waiting for it. We’ve been waiting long and we hope that something can come out of it. We can’t bring back Aubrey. He cannot be brought back, but I would still or the family is still looking towards getting some information so that we can be more satisfied and see actually what happened on that night.”

“Do you believe that through this process, your son, Aubrey, will receive justice?”

“I still have confidence in the judicial system. I am not too concerned that he will receive justice. Like I said, there is no way that he will be brought back, but I would like justice for whoever committed the crime; they face some form of justice. But as I said, the person would have to be proven guilty first of all. And I still hope that something comes out. Like I said I still have faith in the justice system and if they find him not guilty because of the evidence that is presented, we have no hard feelings on that as long as it is fair.”
