Second victim identified in Cayo double murder

San Ignacio police are no closer in finding the persons responsible for the double homicide that occurred over the weekend on a ranch in the Lower Barton Creek area in the Cayo District. Today, however, the police did release the name of the second person killed in the incident. According to authorities the body they discovered lying face down on the ground of the compound is that of sixteen year old Adan Machorro.

Machorro’s body displayed several chop wounds. It is not certain if Machorro was trying to run away from his killers after he may have witnessed the murder of his co worker sixty five year old Ricardo Flores. Flores’s body, suffering numerous stab wounds to the chest, was found on a bed inside a small house on the ranch.
Police say they do not believe Machorro and Flores had any enemies in the area because they had arrived to work at the location only a week and half ago and were not well known. They also believe that drugs were not involved. However police do suspect the men may have been victims of an ongoing crime situation in the area.

Authorities say the murders follow an incident that occurred last week in which another caretaker suffered gunshot wounds after rustlers tried to steal cattle. Police say the ranch where the victims worked raised only horses and all the animals have since been accounted for. The investigators say because the location is an isolated one, it has been difficult to crack the case.

Three persons were detained but sources tell News Five there is no strong evidence against them and more than likely they will be released. Tonight authorities appeal to anyone who may have information about the murders or cattle rustling in the Lower Barton Creek area to please contact the police or Crime Stoppers at 0-800-922-TIPS.
