1 man dead and another critical following accident on Hummingbird Highway

One man is dead and another remains in critical condition, following a road traffic accident this morning on the Hummingbird Highway. Just after eleven a.m., a van driven by thirty-three year old Manuel Simpson crashed into a motorcycle ridden by twenty-nine year old Jose Flamenco. Flamenco, a resident of mile twenty-eight on the Hummingbird Highway, was flung from the cycle to his death. Initial investigations revealed that Simpson, a resident of Placencia, was traveling along with Juan Pau en route to Belmopan, when upon reaching between miles forty-three and forty-four on the highway, he could not avoid hitting Flamenco, who was traveling in the opposite direction. The cycle crashed into the passenger side of the van. Pau was seriously injured by the impact; he was first rushed to the Western Regional Hospital and then transported to the K.H.M.H. in a critical condition. News Five spoke via phone today with Officer Commanding the Belmopan Police Formation, Assistant Superintendent Sinquest Martinez about the fatal RTA.

“The police responded to a fatal traffic accident this morning around eleven-twenty between mile forty-three and forty-four on the Hummingbird Highway. It involved a Hyundai van that was driven at the time by one Manual Simpson from the Placencia Area and a motorcycle that was driven by Jose Flamenco a Belizean laborer of mile twenty-eight of the Hummingbird Highway. Unfortunately, Jose Flamenco succumbed to his injuries while Juan Pau that was traveling along with Manuel Simpson received severe injuries and was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital this morning.”

“We haven’t reached to that point as yet as the investigation still continues. There are people that we need to interview and I cannot divulge that so far because it would be premature for me to say who is at fault. As soon as we are true with our investigation, with the drawing of our sketch plan and with our measurement taking, we will know who is at fault and we will move on from there.”
Simpson, the driver of the van, escaped unharmed and has since been served with a notice of intended prosecution.
