Sister Cecelia’s Fun Day-Outing at B.T.L. Park

The Sister Cecilia Home is a place for seenagers and has among its numbers retired public servants, world war veterans and elderly naturalized Belizeans. But it is rare that these persons are taken outside the confines of the home for a full day of activities. Well today, the newly renovated B.T.L. Park was the venue for a fun-filled outing for forty-six seenagers. Dancing, playing games and socializing with each other and the members of the Belize City Council. News Five spoke with Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley, who says that this is the second year that the council has assisted with the party and that the event is to encourage all seenagers to enjoy the public space.

“Last year at our one year anniversary, we had done a program where we had took the councilors to Sister Cecilia Home and we did a luncheon and music and different things like that. This year, Sister Cecilia’s wrote us and asked us if we could have an activity where we would allow usage of the park, bring people out in tents and different things like that; music, food and different kinds of things just to encourage the seenagers to enjoy the public space and we readily embraced it. Several of our councilors are out here, I’m out here and we are just socializing and showing respect for our older people that they are appreciated and they should live in dignity and they can also enjoy public spaces that have recently been renovated.”

“We thought it would be a nice change for them to get out of the house and to get on the society again. We have a lot of people in there that have not been out from they got in there—all ranging from two to ten years. This also will showcase that the elderly are remembered and the families who have not visited them in a long time can see them on the media and they can remember that they are in there and it can stimulate them to come visit.”

“It very much so falls in line. We want to encourage all stakeholders to utilize the park. The park is for residents of Belize City; it is for all elements of our community. I am very pleased that in the morning a lot of people come out, exercise; it is a lot more people in the morning. In the evenings from two to four, we have a lot of students and teenagers who come out here. So this is just in continuing along that trend to encourage another block of our population and people who don’t often get out much.”
