Man charged with trying to burn down his granny?s house
A Belize City man was today arrested for trying to burn down his grandmother’s house. This morning twenty-seven year old Glenroy McLeary of East Canal appeared before Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord where he was charged with attempted arson. No plea was taken because the crime is an indictable offence, and despite objection from the prosecution, McLeary was offered five thousand dollars bail. He was, however, ordered to stay away from the victim and show up before the clerk of court every week until his next court date on April twenty-eighth. According to Zetora Johnson, on the night of September twelfth 2005, she was at her house on Bocotora Street when she heard bottles breaking. Inside the bottles were a combustible concoction and the veranda of the house soon caught fire. Luckily, the blaze was extinguished before much damage could be done. After the commotion died down, Johnson was told that her grandson was seen throwing a bottle at the house before riding off on a bike. Police had been looking for McLeary since the incident, but only recently detained their suspect.
