Belizeans bring home silver/bronze from C.A. Games
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday. Week three of the RFG Trophy Tournament brought Hankook Verdes of Cayo into the M.C.C. Grounds for a Sunday evening date with the Belize City team called F.C. Belize.
And talk about a fast start for the home team. We?re only five minutes into the ballgame when Clifford Usher sets this beauty up for Leon Jones, whose left foot gives F.C. Belize a 1-zip lead just like that.
Verdes tries to reply off this spotkick from long distance, and while it?s a bullet of this first order, it?s too direct to beat the F.C. keeper.
The visitors keep the pressure on when goalkeeper Rowley fumbles this shot. The rebound is picked up by Richard Jimenez … and boy is his attempt from point-blank range embarrassing.
At the other end, it?s more of this scene when F.C.?s Leon Jones gets this open look at goal only to look bad this time.
In the meantime, this karate move by Jose Caceres leads to a penalty kick for Verdes.
Jose Lara steps up for the west and he does look professional as he ties the ballgame at 1-apiece heading into intermission.
In second half, this cornerkick finds the head of Thomas Castro, but the crossbar intervenes to deny him the goal.
By the way, is this the famous M.C.C. Grounds or are we looking at a dust bowl from the Sahara Desert.
Folks, a key moment in this ballgame comes late in the second half when Everal Gabourel fires this right foot bomb that crashes off the near upright. The rebound affords Daniel Jimenez a header at goal, but watch Elroy Rowley comes up with a magnificent save. At the end of ninety minutes of football we have a 1-1 draw.
In other results from around the league, Benque Viejo United hurt Kremandala Penta 1-zip, Belmopan United crushed Alpha 3-zip, New Site Erei edged Placencia Pirates 3-2, and it was Wagiya hammering Cayo Avengers 4-1.
Looking ahead to week four, on Saturday night Benque Viejo will host New Site Erei and Belmopan United will get a visit from F.C. Belize. On Sunday, Cayo Avengers head north for a date with Alpha in O.W., Kremandala will be at home against Hankook Verdes, and Wagiya plays Placencia Pirates at the Carl Ramos Stadium.

?I?ll have to ask you if you are satisfied with these results.?
Alfred McKenzie
?Yes James, I am more than satisfied. Second place is no disgrace, so I am satisfied. I would like to thank our sponsors Atlantic Bank, Habet and Habet, Brothers Habet, Miss Wendy Oxley, and the National Sports Council. Also, tentatively they are asking us to host the next Central American Bodybuilding Championship in Belize in 2007. But it is tentative for right now, so we?d like all the support come 2007.?
In basketball news from the games, the National Team brought home silver after loosing to the home team Panama in the gold medal game, and we certainly say congratulations.
We also went to say big time congratulations to Marlon Castillo, probably Belize?s best cyclist right now, who finished seventh in the road race at Guatemala and took third in the individual time trial event to bring home a bronze medal.
In other cycling news, nineteen riders started the Santino Bike Club fifty-two mile Belmopan Classic yesterday. Seventeen finished, thirteen belonged to the club. And here is Santino Castillo zipping past Barrington Young to grab first place, while John Burns, he took third.
Looking ahead, the National Road Championships as presented by the Belize Cycling Association comes up Sunday March twenty-sixth, so stay tuned.
Turning to the cricket scene, the Belize Rural saw Excellence bomb Berlan 166-119 thanks to a forty-two run output from Percy Flowers. On the defensive end it was Orson Flowers mowing down five wickets. For Berlan, Andrew Banner scored thirty-four runs and Camala Nicholas took four wickets.
In other results, Brilliant outshone Sunrise 127-120 and Summer Fever torched Surprise 226-71.
On the second division scene Western Eagles easily flying past Bright Star 119-118 with four wickets to spare and Swallows got the default from Die Hard who just couldn?t field a team at game time.
