Experts: pregnant manatee killed by boat
Marine experts have certified that a pregnant manatee found dead along the shore in Buttonwood Bay was struck by a boat’s propellers. According to officials from the Belize Marine Mammal Stranding Network, during the necropsy performed on the carcass of the adult female, several severe injuries were found across its back. Experts tell News Five it is likely that the animal had sought the shallow waters of the area to give birth to its calf. The manatee has since been buried, while its female calf has been taken to Gales Point where its bones will be studied. The body of the manatee washed up on Sunday morning in Buttonwood Bay with the calf still protruding from its uterus.
