Football, cycling and basketball dominate weekend sports
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and we?re here to drop this load of Sports Monday live and in living colour into your living rooms. The RFG Insurance Trophy Tournament, not to be confused with the RFG Insurance Cup Tournament, kicked off over the weekend featuring ten teams in five matches, from two groupings.
At the M.C.C. Grounds yesterday the new season opened to an old rivalry as F.C. Belize hosted Kremandala in a replay of the Belize City derby which has been dominated by the F.C. Belize ball club.
Folks we?re only fifteen minutes into the action when Marcos Souto, the Brazilian, directs this spot kick to the unattended, Tyrone Muschamp. And it?s an easy goal for F.C. Belize thanks to terrible defence from Krem. They take a 1-zip lead.
Krem gets the opportunity to respond immediately to the deficit, but Deon Flowers fails to catch up with the pill at a very crucial time.
It?s another squandered opportunity for Kremandala, why? Orland Lyons simply can?t find the sticks. Make it three strikes in a row for the Krem team. Deon McCauley places this header just outside the sticks from point-blank range.
On the very next possession for the F.C. Belize team, Dennis Myvette fires a riser from long distance that crashes into the back of the net for the 2-zip F.C. Belize lead.
For Krem, things take a turn for the worse when Paul Nunez forgets which sport he is playing and gets chased off the field.
In second half Krem tries to get onto scoreboard off this corner kick, but this header by Ian Gaynor lacks the punch to do the job.

Of course F.C. Belize goes on to post the 2-zip victory in regulation time.
In other results from around the league over the weekend, Belmopan United & Hankook Verdes struggled to a 1-1 stalemate, New Site Erei and Wagiya also settled for a 1-1 draw, and Cayo Avengers, well they held Alpha of Orange Walk to a 2-2 finish.
Looking at the upcoming Sunday schedule ? New Site Erei travels to Hankook Verdes, Placencia Pirates will visit Cayo Avengers, F.C. Belize heads to O.W. for a date with Alpha, Wagiya will get a visit from Benque Viejo United, and Kremandala will be at the M.C.C. Grounds against Belmopan United.
In other football news people, the Belize Community inside New York City, United States, through Wally-Dee Productions are honouring five footballers from the past. From left to right meet Willie Williams of Landivar, Earl ?Mandingo? Barnett of While Label; and Cristobal Mayen, Gene Guild, and Carl ?Bunucal? Ramos, all of Berger 404 fame, all residing inside the United States. We say big respect to these guys who did a lot for Belizean football.
Turning to the basketball scene, the San Pedro Sharks were in town Friday night against the Belize Bank Bulldogs looking to avenge its opening night loss.
And it?s American Lawrence Culver getting the Sharks off with a big time three.
Earl Johnson then hits the first field goal for the Bank with this turnaround jumper and he would finish with fifteen points.
For the Bank, Darwin ?Puppy? Leslie makes things looks easy ? he would strike for a total fifteen points.
At the other end, Carlisle Barrow finds Keith ?Superman? Acosta and yeah we?ll take the two-handed jam, my man.
From the corner, Carlisle Barrow wants three, so he gets three.
However, down court Aubrey Lopez deals to Eric Cheers, who comes up with his version of the slam mamma jamma.
Now meet Stephen Williams on this pretty move for two tough points ? again Williams would lead his team in scoring with twenty points.
At the half, it?s a twelve point San Pedro lead.

Then Williams finds Acosta with this high lab and Mr. Superman is beginning to look like himself ? he would finish with eighteen points.
Folks we?re in the fourth quarter, so San Pedro goes to Keith Acosta and he delivers two more big time points. The Islanders would not allow the Bank back into the ball game as they go on to post their first victory in a 92-82 big W.
Turning to the cycling news, some twenty-two riders were registered and vetted for the Santino?s Bike Club National Road Championships, which ran from Leslie Imports here in Belize City to the big finish at La Loma Luz Clinic at Santa Elena, Cayo.
And this is Adrian Faux rolling in uncontested for first place.
James ?Cocky? Welch then edges Santino ?The Chief? Castillo for second place, big bad Kenneth Butler pulls up fourth, while John Burns rounds out the top five.
In other cycling news, people, here?s a reminder: Sunday fourth March brings up the twenty-fourth Belmopan Cycle Classic, which will run from Belize City to Belmopan and back. Marlon Castillo goes in as defending champion.
We also take this opportunity to remind you that the Women?s Week Bike rally is set for Saturday, March eleventh at six a.m. Registration can be done at the Women?s Department before race day, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, we would be remiss not to remind you that Saturday?s Belize Cycling Association fifty-two mile race through the Boom circuit was won by Roger Troyer of Cayo in two hours ten minutes and fifty-five seconds. Juan Gonzalez took second, Giovanni Leslie third, Glen O?Brian fourth, while Marlon Castillo rounds out the top five.
