A Labour Education Seminar

A training workshop on employers’ and workers’ rights and responsibilities under the Belize Labor Legislations and ILO conventions was held today in Belmopan.  Representatives from the National Trade Union Congress of Belize and the Ministry of Labor and Local Government, including Labor Commissioner Ivan Williams, were on hand for the daylong session.  Among the issues discussed were collective bargaining agreements, as well as the settlement of disputes under the Essential Services Act.

Godwin Hulse, Minister of Labor

Godwin Hulse

“The whole idea of this is to get us engaged or have the harmony in the workplace to move our industries forward, to move our businesses forward, to treat our employees with dignity and respect. To have people working for the public sector and the private sector go home feeling happy and come in the morning willing to work because all is honky dorey. That is easily attainable in this country. We are long way ahead a lot of countries I know, but we need to go the extra mile or two to accomplish the rest. That then requires from all of you as employers—not only the employees—the concept of being as the new term is being coined, a servant leader where you begin to understand the needs of your people; you begin to be able to help them as they have difficulties.”
