Also being recognized today was Rasha Dawson of Gwen Lizarraga High School. Eighteen-year-old Dawson is a fourth form student in the business program at the high school. Following an accident twelve years ago, she lost her right leg and now relies on a prosthetic limb to get around. Despite her physical challenge, Dawson has been a role model to many of her colleagues and lecturers.

“I feel good because winning something for my school; it motivates me because I win for the school. I am a role model, I could be a role model for them to encourage them to do the right thing.  I don’t think that nothing could stop me from doing the right thing because every day I wake up, I have a mindset that today will be a good day. I don’t be like no, today will not be good. I got the mindset that yes it will be good and I could pass through this day.”

“We want to award the students who have not faltered or who have not yielded into the violence and gang activities; award them with something that they can feel proud of for being outstanding students, stellar students, secular students. Also for their day to day activities and the perseverance that they go through every day.  Miss Dawson was definitely the right choice as she is a fourth form students, one; two, she is a student that has never been on any suspension, has never been caught up in any situations say that we have to deal with conflict mediation for. Also, she is one of the students who are challenged physically and even with her challenges; she still partakes in all the activities as a regular student. She does not shy away from any responsibility or chores given to her, so that’s one of the reasons why we awarded her.”

“My advice to them is stay positive and stay on the right path and don’t make bad company lead you astray.”
