P.U.P. gears up for upcoming municipal elections
Municipal elections are less than a year away and both political parties are gearing up and putting together their respective slates to contest the various seats in local government. The results of those elections will be seen as a test of the upcoming general elections. While the P.U.P. has not announced its slate in Belize City, it is known that in the U.D.P. camp, Mayor Darrell Bradley will not be contesting since he did not put in his name before the deadline to so do. In the P.U.P. camp, work is underway to conclude standard bearer conventions before settling on candidates for municipal elections. According to party leader Francis Fonseca, those names should be in by the end of August.
Francis Fonseca, Party Leader, P.U.P.
“A lot of work s going into that issue across the country and we are, as you know, as a party we are finalizing our standard bearer conventions. We hope and I expect those to be finished by the end of July in areas of the country where we, like the south and the north, we still have one left in the north and others like the north, the south and the west where we’re finished with conventions we have already started the process of putting together those municipal teams. So we expect that, at the latest, around the end of August we will have in place our municipal teams.”

“And are you able to say what will be, we’ve heard a lot of chatter from the Albert Division. I know that Mr. Martin Galvez… has put in his name as has the attorney, lawyer Sabido and we’ve heard a lot of chatter that it’s being held off because Richard ‘Dickie’ Bradley will be fielded by the P.U.P. as a candidate in the Albert Division. What is the status of that and is the party going to decide on it tomorrow?”
Francis Fonseca
“No, no. We have decided even at the last meeting of the executive that we would keep the Albert Division convention open until I think it’s July, I don’t remember the specific date in July but we set a date in July that we will keep that convention open and that is a matter that’s ongoing.”
Municipal elections are slated for 2015.
