Chain snatcher sentenced to 5 years behind bars

Meanwhile, the Chief Magistrate has sentenced a man in absentia in connection with a robbery reported by a Belize City woman. According to Sharlett Dawson, on November seventh, 2003, she was walking on Banak Street when someone came up to her and demanded her chain. She said no, to which her attacker replied “A wah shot yuh inna yuh face.” The man then ripped the chain from Dawson’s neck and took off. The victim headed straight to the police station where to her utter surprise, there in the detention cell she positively identified the chain snatcher. That man, eighteen year old Emmerson Young, was charged with robbery and uttering threatening words. Even though Young didn’t appear in court today, Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord continued with the case against him and found him guilty. Young has been sentenced to five years in jail for robbery and fined two hundred dollars for threatening Dawson. He will begin to serve his time behind bars as soon as he is picked up by police.
