Accused Cayo rapist turns himself in to police
He fled the country in August of last year following allegations that he raped three British teenagers during a night of drinking. Today, after almost six months on the lam, Aaron Juan turned himself in to police in San Ignacio. The twenty-four year old tour guide was immediately arraigned in Magistrate’s Court on two counts of rape and one count of carnal knowledge. He was released on bail of ten thousand dollars plus one surety of the same amount. He was also required to surrender his travel documents and check in with the court every Monday and Friday until his next appearance on February twenty-seventh. The three girls were part of a larger group of British students who had come to Belize on what was ostensibly a work/study programme organised by a U.K. tour company. The students were living and doing landscaping on a resort owned by Juan’s family. It is alleged that following a night of drinking at a San Ignacio bar the girls returned to the resort where Juan had sex with them in their room. Juan’s father has maintained that Aaron was seduced by the aggressive young women who practically demanded that he engaged in sexual acts with them. It is believed that Juan spent at least part of his self-imposed exile in the United States.
