Louisiana Government School in Orange Walk wins banner competition

The theme for the 2014 Coca-Cola National Spelling Bee is “Go for the Goal!” and annually a banner and poster competition is held simultaneously during the finals. 2012 winners from Louisiana Government School in Orange Walk today won yet again for their banner. Teacher, Alginold Bennett, says that the banner is the product of the creativity of both the teachers and students.

Alginold Bennett, Winner, Banner Competition

“We do everything at Louisiana by committee. We got second place—I am one of the coaches of the speller. In connection with the banner, we had a meeting, we pooled together a group of teachers; it was ten teachers. We have with me, Miss Sharon, Miss Rosy and some who couldn’t make it. Coming here I can tell you, we were already sure of first place in the banner competition and no less than second in the Spelling Bee.”

“Tell us about working together as a team; do you guys expect to participate next year again for the Spelling Bee and possibly this, the banner competition?”

Alginold Bennett

“That’s a very good question. Every single year, we start out with spellers from a very young age and they work their way up to representing Louisiana School. So I guarantee, mark my words, next year we will be here. In connection with the banner competition, two years ago we were also victorious here in Gallon Jug. And what gave us the inspiration, we can’t wait for this World Cup to be here. If you notice, one of the main focus of our banner is the big football in the middle. That was created using an umbrella, which was the idea of Miss Lily, who I know will be listening to hear that. But every part of it was put together by teachers. Anything we do, it is a collective effort by teachers and the students.”
