Bizarre shooting/suicide attempt leaves shooter critical

Story PictureThirty-five year old Charles Grant, a special constable attached to the Tourism Police Unit, remains in a very critical condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital after he tried to kill himself. The suicide attempt followed Grant’s shooting of police constable Ian Geban in the head. Luckily, the bullet lodged just under the skin below Geban’s hairline and did not penetrate the skull. The bizarre Monday night incident was a continuation of trouble that began on Sunday. On that morning, Grant was involved in a domestic dispute with his common-law wife and he is reported to have fired a shot through the couple’s house. The bullet narrowly missed Grant’s step-daughter who was inside the building at the time. Following the incident, Grant fled the scene. Police launched a manhunt for him, but it was not until last night that authorities got word of his whereabouts. According to the police, around seven Monday night they received information that Grant was seen on Baghdad Street near the intersection with Mosul Street. A team was dispatched, but upon arriving in the area the police were met by Grant who was armed with a loaded nine millimetre pistol. According to one eyewitness who did not wish to appear on camera, it was a chaotic time for everyone as bullets started flying. The eyewitness says a number of people were asking the young man to give himself up, but to no avail.

Eyewitness
?Someone was begging somebody to surrender. I cannot say it was the police, I cannot say who, but they were telling the person to surrender. Apparently he fails to surrender and this is what happened.?

?When my attention was drawn to a gunfire, a single shot first, followed by a volley of shots. Who were shooting, I don?t know at that point in time, but later on we saw one man running from off Baghdad Street onto Mosul Street through my alley where I live. I heard one more shot and that?s the final shot, he dropped.?

Police found Grant lying motionless at the mouth of an alley and transported him to the K.H.M.H. He remains unconscious suffering from a bullet wound to the right temple. As for P.C. Geban, he was treated and released. Geban was driving a police vehicle at the time of the shooting and the bullet penetrated the windshield before it struck the officer.
