A boxing match in Belize

Fans of boxing are in for a treat this weekend as amateur pugilists from Belize and Guatemala will do battle inside the squared circle at the ITVET Compound on Saturday evening.  The Belize Boxing Federation has organized a series of matches pitting athletes from Belize City and San Ignacio against our neighbors in the west.  With well-known names, including Max Pain and Sherman Galvez, the event is being billed as a must see for fans of the sport.  News Five caught up with B.B.F. President Moses Sulph and the boxers as they prepare for the weekend of fighting.

“The event which will be held tomorrow that is sanctioned by the Belize Boxing Federation is called the Smart Road to Success Cross Border Championship.  Basically, we will be going up against Guatemalans in this leg of the cross border championship and it will be held at the ITVET compound in Belize City where the old technical was, in front of Lee Chee. The time that it will start is six-thirty p.m.; general admission is ten dollars, VIP, twenty dollars. We are making it very accommodating so that people can come out and support their team. We need the Belizean public to come out and cheer for the Belizean team. And we may have people from Guatemala, but you can come and cheer for them. So whichever side you are on, we want the Belize to come out and support and to cheer for these young men. It will be about nine, ten different matches that will take place—Belizeans versus Guatemalans. We definitely have to give some shout out to the sponsorship for the assistance because without them, we would not be able to have the event. Smart is the biggest sponsor for the event and then we have a couple like Grace Kennedy, Barry Bowen, Monica’s Pawn Shop, Krem FM, Positive Vibes Radio, Love FM, National Sports Council—many of these did not give money, they gave in kind; something that we needed for the event. So we are just thankful that we are able to have this event and we guarantee that if the crowd come out and support tomorrow, there will be a victory for Belize. I know that these young men are capable and they are going to make us proud, but we need the support of the Belizean public.”

“Who are some of the local fighters that we are looking at?”

Moses Sulph

“Definitely everybody should know Mister Sherman Galvez and Max “Pain” Williams—and ih noh name that for nothing because he is going to give pain to the opponent. We also have a young man from Cayo, Lion’s Den Gym. We have couple young men who are coming up like Kendis Gentle and Maximiliano. But the two main events are Sherman Galvez and max “Pain” Williams. So we expect that pain will be brought to the Guatemalan counterparts and we are just asking you to come out.”

Tickets can be bought at the door on Saturday evening.
