Football, billiards and volleyball in weekend sports

Story PictureGood evening, I’m James Adderley welcoming you to this delivery of Sports Monday.

So let’s head west to Esperanza Cayo where Gentle Touch hosted the Belize Defense Force yesterday as the female football competition continues to intensify. Immediately into the action, the B.D.F.’s Ann Godoy botches this easy save but gets rescued by defense Cynthia Salazar. However, it quickly becomes clear that Gentle Touch is the protagonist in this outing when Abby Halliday forces Godoy to come up with a legitimate save. The B.D.F. goes to the set piece and we must admit this long distance dial by Aracelly Lambey almost hits the target, forcing Eden Gentle to react. We’re fourteen minutes in when Abby Halliday comes out of this crowd with possession and finds Brazilian Kimberly Perez who puts the home team up 1-zip. At the other end Cindy Fuentes tries to lead Sherain Tracey but Gentle reads and intervenes. The second goal of the match comes off this spot kick at the thirty-third minute triggered by Abby Halliday and poorly defended by Ann Godoy. Folks, we’re into injury time in the first half when Halliday gets her second goal of the match with this power punch off the left foot.

In second half play Halliday looks for the hat trick with this push but Aracelly Lambey does the job defensively. Kimberly Perez makes it a 4-zip ballgame at the fifty-ninth minute when the defense yields back this ball to her and she shakes the cord for her second goal of the match. This brings tension into the ballgame and Abby Halliday is about to lock horns with Sherain Tracey off this tackle. It’s getting late and the B.D.F. looks for the consolation goal but Cynthia Salazar does not get enough on the shot. And girls, girls, can’t we all get along? Mercifully, the referee makes his timely appearance and in the end cooler heads prevail. Meanwhile, it’s Kim Perez again on the hunt and in two attempts to produce the hat trick, the Brazilian comes away empty. Gentle Touch goes on to post the 4-zip big W.

In the other match on Saturday, Pumas Girls pounded Millennium 5-2. Thus the semi-finals will continue this Saturday, August first, finds game two between Millennium Girls and Pumas at three-thirty p.m. and in the nightcap, the B.D.F. takes on Gentle Touch inside the M.C.C. Grounds.

In other female football news, the F.F.B. Champion and holders of the Delhart Courtenay Cup, played a friendly against Flores Peten in Guatemala yesterday and picked up the 2-1 big W. we also want to congratulate New Site Tren Settaz, who beat Harlem Globetrotters 4-1 to win the Dangriga Mayor’s Cup. David Luoize of Hopkins was voted best goalkeeper, Reon Brooks of Silk Grass best defense, James Logan of Valley Pride best midfield, Carlos Lino of Backatown best forward, Boco Thompson Oldest player award, Shanty Castillo of Benguche Rookie of the Year and Dwayne Sampson of New Site took home the coveted MVP honours. We say congratulations to all.

In billiards news, Mike’s Club beat MJ’s 4-1 to make the Guiness Nine Ball semi-finals round. Advance finishes on top with 64 points, Catt’s Place 62, Travellers 62 and Mike’s 58. thus these four teams go on to the semi-final action. The action kicks off Tuesday, seven p.m. inside Vicky’s Club where Advance takes on Mike’s Club and on Thursday Travellers will host Catt’s Place. Stay tuned. Why? Because we’ll keep you posted.

Finally, checking in on the Volleyball scene, we join the finals of the Beach Volleyball Tournament staged at Old Belize over the weekend as Raul Arnold and Ernest Broaster try to stay alive against Jermaine Audinet and Arvid Arnold. Raul can’t get the ball over the net for match point and folks, they certainly weren’t ready for this service from Audinet. The point is good, the match is over. The win goes to Jermaine Audinet and Arvid Arnold in straight sets 21-16, 21-17. On the ladies side Thara Blanco and Barbara Cadle beat Jasmine Andrews and Esther Middleton 21-15, 21-13, also straight sets to take that title and we say kudos.

Hey folks, that’s our show for today. We invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
