Weekend shootings in Belize City

And while the weekend was punctuated by either murders or questionable deaths, it was not confined to that. There were also other crimes of a lesser nature. Just before two on Saturday afternoon twenty-four year old Gilroy Garnett was shot in his right thigh. Garnett was standing near De He Li Store on Freetown Road when another youth he recognized as Stephan shot him. Police are looking for the suspect as Garnett recuperates from his injury. But there was another shooting that same day and this one occurred on the other side of town and involved a Police officer. Corporal Gavin Sanchez contends that at around seven forty five on Saturday night he was at Target Shopping Center on Church Street when he spotted twenty five year old George Hernandez, who was wanted for burglary. Sanchez said he approached Hernandez and identified himself as a police officer, but Hernandez hit him in the face. Sanchez then pulled out his service weapon and shot Hernandez in his right thigh. Sanchez has been placed on interdiction until the Police Department’s Internal Affairs unit has completed an investigation.
