B.D.F. soldier shot as he socialized in the Jane Usher Boulevard Area

There is another shooting to report; twenty-three year old Carlton Augustine, a B.D.F. soldier, is recovering from gunshot wounds he sustained over the weekend.  On Saturday night, shortly before eight o’clock, Augustine was returning from dropping home his girlfriend when he visited a residence on Curl Thompson Street.  Reports are that he had only just stopped in and was socializing with four others when an unidentified gunman emerged on the scene.  As many as seven rounds were fired in their direction, a single slug finding its mark on Augustine’s right side and another struck him in the left upper arm.  While a motive for the shooting remains unclear, the family contends that he was simply a victim of circumstance.  Police, on the other hand, believe that Augustine was the intended target.

Sgt. Ismael Westby, NCO-CIB, Precinct 3, Belize City Police

“On Saturday night, where sometime around seven-fifty-eight p.m., police visited the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where the person identified as Carlton Augustine, twenty-three year old B.D.F. soldier of a Curl Thompson Street address was seen suffering from gunshot wound to the upper right ribcage and to the upper left arm. Initial investigations led us to that Carlton Augustine was socializing with some friends in a yard on the same street when a male person wearing a grey shirt ran into the yard and fired several shots towards his direction causing his injuries. Based on that investigation, police have canvassed in the area and at this present moment, we believe that he was the intended target. We are looking for one person in respect to this investigation. Nobody has been detained, but we are looking at this incident very seriously.”

“He is a B.D.F. soldier; he is in a stable condition from what we have been told. What has he told you as a possible motive?”

Sgt. Ismael Westby

“Based on his interview, he has confirmed to us that he has no kind of problem with anyone where he would probably come up to a name or suspect to the police as to a motive. Based on certain investigation we are conducting, we are developing some unconfirmed information that we are working on with respect to the incident.”

Augustine’s attacker made good his escape, but is said to have been wearing a grey t-shirt.  Scenes of Crime technicians were subsequently able to retrieve seven, nine millimeter expended shells from the area.  He remains in stable condition at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital.  A police investigation continues.
