Fishing co-op comes through for shooting victim

Today we are happy to report that at least one Belizean business has stepped up to the plate to assist a person in pain. On Monday, we ran an update on shooting victim twenty-three year Lisa Garoy who doctors say will never be able to walk again. However, it was reported that an operation will be able to at least let the young mother sit up in bed and get around in a wheelchair. Unable to afford the required care, Lisa’s mother, Cynthia Gentle, appealed to the public for financial help… but she believed that her cries would fall on deaf ears. Not so. Today Gentle received a sizeable donation from the National Fishermen’s Co-op. Gentle said it all started with an early afternoon visit to her home.

?I hear a rap at my door and when I opened the door it was one of the guys and he told me they want to talk to me. They brought me here and bring me around everybody and tell me that they want to have a donation.?

?We would appreciate if other business houses would assist her and do the same… This morning when he had a board meeting, the board decided that as fishermen they should put back something in the society. So we got in touch with Miss Cynthia and she came in and explained her situation this afternoon. We had a meeting this afternoon and we decided that we would donate two thousand dollars towards the cause.?

The money will be used to help purchase the brace Lisa Garoy needs. However, the family still needs over eight thousand dollars more to cover the operation and related medical expenses. Morning talk show where pledges can also be called in.
