After school YMCA students celebrate joy of season

Story PictureThis evening the Young Men’s Christian Association joined the list of charitable organisations trying to make a difference in the lives of others. Even at this hour, members of the Y.M.C.A. are hosting a Christmas party for some of its youngest members. The children are all participants in the Y.M.C.A. After School Programme which caters to students who are having a difficult time in school. Although not all of the fifty children invited to the event showed up, it was clear those who did had fun.

Lloyda Fairweather, Volunteer, YMCA
?Most of the kids here, some are underprivileged, some of them don?t have good backgrounds and basically what we?re trying to do is helping them to understand the real meaning of Christmas; it doesn?t have to mean a lot of material things, it?s just having fun and celebrating the season.?

?Well things are going great right now. We have the volunteers playing musical chairs, which is really fun because the kids are cheering them on and we?re just having fun doing things.?

Today’s event at the YMCA was made possible through the assistance of students from Saint John’s College Sixth Form. According to the Y, in 2006 they have plans to establish a book club, as well as scout group.
