Ousted Honduran president makes brief return home
And in regional news, President Manuel Zelaya entered Honduran territory this afternoon from the border with Nicaragua, twenty-seven days after he was deposed and exiled to Costa Rica by the Honduran military. Zelaya remained in his homeland for some time and then returned to Nicaragua. He told a pool of media personnel and supporters that he was forced to act on his own after talks failed to reach a negotiated settlement. The de facto government of Roberto Mitcheleti has rejected the return of Zelaya and declared that the mediation with Costa Rica’s President Oscar Arias had failed but later today it said that it was still open to dialogue. Mitcheleti also warned that Zelaya would be arrested and imposed a curfew. Clashes were reported between Zelaya’s supporters and the security forces.
