Weekend football action has New Site Erei as champs

Story PictureGood evening I?m James Adderley and here?s a fresh dish of Sports Monday coming your way.

Week thirteen of the RFG Cup Tournament finally brought the long awaited visit of Dangriga?s new Site Erei to the M.C.C. Grounds where the south made its presence known by the sound of the cultural drums.

However, Kremandala is the host team going in this monster confrontation inside the Barracks and a win today would put them in the elite class of teams heading to the playoffs.

Of course Krem?s road record supersedes its home stats and certainly they would like to take this one at the Garden today, so Dion Flowers sets table for David McCauley Sr., but this early attempt at the lead leans outside the near upright.

For sure folks, Dion Flowers feels he?s been fouled by this defensive play from behind, but the man in the middle possesses a different perspective.

However, there?s only one way to view this finish off the pass from Deon McCauley ? credit Dion Flowers with the goal as Krem takes a 1-zip lead thirteen minutes into this ballgame.

We must ask people, isn?t the referee supposed to give a penalty for plays like these? …Flowers falls, but the referee plays on. It could have been the tense atmosphere that?s prevailing on the pitch right about now.

Late in the half, New Site Erei begins to press forward and Deon Frazer has half a chance to produce the equaliser here, but Kevin Dawson beats him to the punch.

Meanwhile, If you?re wondering what has happened to the legendary Norman ?Tilliman? Nunez in his first appearance at the M.C.C. Grounds this football season, well he?s been alive and kicking when he times this pass perfectly and beats the keeper to tie the ballgame at 1-apiece. We show you this play in slow motion to reinforce in your mind how bad Nunez fell after making this play, but he would continue.

At intermission we?re tied at 1-apiece.

In second half Deon McCauley decides to test the New Site keeper from long range, but nothing doing.

Keep your eyes on this long push people, Ryan Simpson catches up with it and his right foot floater lands in the far corner to give New Site a 2-1 lead.

The city team looks to respond immediately with this Emory Nunez effort, but he doesn?t put enough on the pill.

Of course we will have to find out from Lennox Castillo on this particular play, why he needs another touch to punch this shot. At the other end, Jacinto Bermudez raises up to lead this corner kick, but the launch sails over.

Now behold the educated left foot of one Emory Nunez, only problem is the spotkick is right at the goalkeeper.

Folks, it?s New Site in command when Ryan Simpson picks up this loose ball and punches it back with the right foot as the visitors take a 3-1 lead and Simpson gets his second goal of the match at the eighty-sixth minute.

Kremandala comes right back with this individual effort from Jacinto Bermudez, but it proves to be too little too late as New Site Erei gets three points from the 3-2 big W at the Garden yesterday.

In other results from around the league, in Group A: Cayo Avengers in burned Placencia Pirates 1-zip to pick up their first season win…Hey bruk out the champagne out west! Hankook Verdes and F.C. Belize battled to a 1-1 stalemate.

In Group B: Mango Creek bombed Benque Viejo United 5-zip, while the San Pedro Seahawks sank Calcutta Bulls in a 2-1 finish.

Now here?s a look at he standings after week thirteen with one schedule remaining to conclude regular season. Wagiya leads Group A with twenty-nine points, Hankook Verdes has twenty-eight, F.C. Belize twenty-three, Kremandala nineteen; these four teams around going to the playoffs from Group A. Placencia finishes from Group A with twelve points, Benque Viejo United five, and Cayo Avengers did get the big W this season, they have three points and could finish with six. Over in Group B: new Site Erei leads with thirty-two points, followed by Mango Creek with twenty-six and San Pedro with twenty-three; these three teams are assured of making the playoffs, thus seven out of the eight playoff teams have already emerged. BOCA has the inside track from this group to make the final team to make it to the post season. They show nineteen points at this juncture, Belmopan United has sixteen, Calcutta Bulls show fifteen.

Turning to the cycling scene, the fifty-one point three mile road race staged by the Belize Cycling Association on Saturday through the Burrell Boom circuit saw Marlon Castillo take top honours in two hours, four minutes, twenty-three seconds, Giovanni Leslie finished second, Charles Lewis third, Mateo Cruz fourth, while Gregg Lovell rounds out the top five. We hope these elite riders are getting ready for the annual cross country event, which isn?t that far away.

Changing gears folks, let?s head to the M.C.C. Grounds where the mighty fundraiser for Wilhelm White was staged on Saturday. And thanks must be given to all who supported this event as presented by Dara Cyber Theatre.

And here?s the man of the moment, Wilhelm White himself, a former football star who lost his limb, showing the world that there?s a life after football. Big respect.

We?ve got to give credit to the many players who signed the jersey in which Wilhelm played his last semi-pro championship match, and kudos to those who bought the T-shirt in support and who observed the game release by Dara Cyber Theatre. We didn?t get a photo of the innovative businessman and football fan Joel Robinson who put this all together on Saturday, but respect is due. Our final word is, stay strong Wilhelm White.

That?s it for this week, we invite you back, same time, same place. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
