The Shakespeare Global Theater Company Performs Hamlet at the Bliss
Opening at the Bliss tonight is the play, the Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, better known as Hamlet by actors from the Shakespeare’s Global Theater Company of London. The theater company is on a world tour which began in April of this year in the honor of Shakespeare’s four hundred and fiftieth birthday. The group of seventeen actors, stage managers and a tour associate made Belize and has already performed in thirty-two countries and from Belize they move on to Guatemala. While the proceeds of the performance will be donated to the Lifeline Foundation to fund projects to benefit Belizean children, at three this afternoon, there was a free performance for children. Just hours before their debut on stage, the media got the opportunity to find out from the theater company how the play’s values relate to Belize.

“The idea came after a big festival in 2012 as part of the Olympic Games in London where we brought companies from every corner of the world to our stage and now we are trying to take our show everywhere.”

“How do you grapple with the fact that a lot of the countries do not speak English? How does Shakespeare translate?”

“I think that is a ethereal thing that has taken us by surprise; the fact that a story like Hamlet is so universal; the themes in it are so universal to human beings everywhere regardless of what language you speak or political, social, economic situation you might find yourself in. And I think that’s been surprising for us too to find that the story translates because it is such a good story. It is full of humanity, it is full of relationships we all understand—the relationship between a father and son, the relationship between a mother and son, the relationship between two lovers, family and court. And then the second is that it is an incredibly nourishing play for a group of actors to work on for two years and it is not a play that you get bored with easily. I think there is so much in it and I think that is one thing about doing the play for two years. You want to do a play that will keep feeding you and feeding the audience every time you tell the story. And I think personally for me, Hamlet is one of those plays.”

“We take the same show everywhere. So the same show you are going to see here in Belize is the same show that we do in London when we are at the Globe; the same show that we do in Cuba, when we are in the states; everywhere we go, it is always the same. So that’s the most important thing so that the quality doesn’t change of the show and the way they approach the audience.”
