Local INTERPOL investigates human trafficking

Tonight local INTERPOL officials in Belmopan continue to investigate a reported case of human trafficking involving a minor, the child’s parents, and an American citizen. Information about the case is still sketchy as authorities have remained tight-lipped. This is what we do know: a thirteen year old Belizean girl was found in the company of an American man in El Salvador. The man, who identified himself as the child’s guardian, reportedly told authorities that he bought the child from her parents who are from the Cow Pen area in the Stann Creek District. The man allegedly told authorities that the transaction was made earlier this year in June in Belmopan. When News Five contacted Interpol we were told that at this time they are in no position to release an official statement, but would be forwarding a press release on the matter by the end of the day. But up to news time tonight, we still have not received any word from Belmopan. We understand the child is now in the care of Social Services in the capital city.
