National Security Ministry calls Press Briefing in the Aftermath of the Weekend Tragedy
There is a great deal of outrage tonight surrounding a fatal traffic accident near Succotz early Saturday morning. It involved a vehicle driven by Deputy Commissioner of Police Miguel Segura, and resulted in one fatality and one man still fighting for his life in the KHMH. We’ll have full coverage of that incident and subsequent events, but first we’ll show you an amateur video shot immediately after the accident, as Segura exited his vehicle. It shows the Deputy Commissioner zipping up his pants and calmly lighting a cigarette. It has gone viral on social media, and we believe that it is likely the reason for decisions taken in regard to Segura. Here’s that video shot just after the fatal accident.
Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
“I personally haven’t seen the video so I cannot respond to it. I think that the appropriate person to respond to that in terms of whether it is callous or not callous should be Mister Segura. It would be improper of me to say what were his thoughts and what he was doing and why he was that. It wouldn’t be improper of me to do that.”
Col. Ret’d George Lovell, C.E.O., Ministry of National Security
“I saw the video, umm, my initial impression is that he seems not to be too concerned over what happened, but wanted to take a cigarette smoke. But then again I do not know precisely what portion of the activities or when precisely that that happened. Did it happen as the incident happened or did it happen when he was now trying to relax, trying to contemplate what precisely had occurred. So it unfair to me to really use that small clip that we have seen. I saw a clip where he was taking a cigarette and he was trying to fix his attire. I don’t know precisely when that was taken…i don’t know if it is something that was taken just as the incident happened or long after it happened. So it is unfair for me to draw a conclusion based on that small clip that I’ve seen.”
