Little Miss Pageant to be Held at the Bliss
The Concerned Belizean Women organization is putting off one of its many annual fundraising activities this weekend. It is the Independence Day Junior Miss Pageant. Eight young girls are contending for the title in the fifth annual event that will be held at the Bliss Center for the Performing Arts this Sunday. The group started preparing at the beginning of August says organizer, Karen Vernon. The school girls will be competing in several segments which will t5est their knowledge on the history of their districts. We caught up with the group while they rehearsed at the Bliss Auditorium.

“You’ve just witness the rehearsals for the Independence Day Junior Miss Pageant which takes place this Sunday here at the Bliss at five p.m. This is the fifth annual pageant.”

“Tell us about the purpose of the pageant.”

“The main purpose for the pageant is to help raise funds for Concern Belizean Women. We are an organization that assists disenfranchised women and children; we do scholarships, we donate to school feeding programs and people come to us throughout the year for donations for different activities. So we do fundraising and donate to those causes.”

“Tell us about how the event has grown over the years and the different segments that these young girls will be participating in.”

“As I said, it is the fifth annual and it is a different set of young girls every year and they come to the first rehearsals that we have and they are shy and they don’t come out of their shell as yet. But by today, you could see on stage that they have a lot of self-confidence. They are doing their dance, they are doing their talent; they know what they are doing. When they step out on that stage it is like they are on a runway you know. I wonder where they learn these things sometimes you know, but they are very talented. And it is not just a pageant because they have to represent a district and they have to do a platform statement on that district and they also have to do a talent. So you know they are very talented young ladies. I think it develops them. It is culture, it is arts and you know that arts and culture and sports in a youth life helps development them and make them a more rounded person. So it definitely helps.”
The show begins at five p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available from the contestants and from the Bliss for ten dollars.
