Tropical Storm Warning on for 19th weekend

Story PictureThe National Meteorological Service has been busy all day closely monitoring the movements of what has now become Tropical Storm Gamma. The system now threatens Belize, especially the coastal areas as it moves west northwest. Chief Meteorologist Carlos Fuller says he wants the public to understand the potential danger of the storm and cautions everyone to be extremely wary of venturing too far away from safe ground. Fuller says he has been advising the public since Thursday to keep an eye on the system and to not consider ourselves out of the woods, even if international predictions have the storm heading more northward.

Carlos Fuller, Chief Meteorologist
?The most important thing right now is to monitor the local media. The reason is that we?ll be seeing maybe broad pictures from the international media, but they will not be speaking directly to what we are feeling at home. This is a very dynamic situation, you will not have a lot of time to track the system, and so any advisories would have to come out very quickly from the local media and we need to be monitoring that right now as opposed to the foreign media. It is too close to land for us to depend on them right now.?

?Indications are that this thing could be with us for the next or three days, so we certainly are looking forward to a very wet weekend with possibly flooding occurring across the country.?

This afternoon the government issued a tropical storm warning for the entire country and all mariners are ordered to remain in port.
