Anglicans in Belize have new bishop
It is one of Belize City’s most historic buildings, lovingly restored and cared for by its congregation. It is normally a quiet, reserved place, set a bit apart from the hustle and bustle of downtown. But today, St. John’s Cathedral opened its doors wide, inviting the country to join with them in celebrating the consecration of their new bishop. Today, Reverend Canon Philip Wright become Bishop Philip Wright in a three hour plus ceremony that began with a walk down Regent and Albert Street and then to the Cathedral for a service led by the Archbishop of the West Indies, Drexel Gomez. And while the event was a serious one, it was anything but sombre, with music and singing and a sense of celebration that drew the attention of everyone who passed near the Cathedral. The service was so well attended, seats had to be placed outside on the grounds and many of the guests watched the ceremony on TV monitors. The event was attended by Anglican clergy from around the region and special guests included Catholic Bishop Dorrick Wright. Here are some highlights of this morning’s consecration at St. John’s Cathedral.
