ACC Raises Flag in Honor of Independence Day

Back in 1982 on September twenty-seventh, St. Hilda’s and St. Michael’s high schools in Belize City amalgamated to become the Anglican Cathedral College located on downtown Albert Street in Belize City. The school today had its annual flag raising activity at its campus where students, parents, faculty and staff engaged in patriotic performances. Aside from the raising of the flag, the release of balloons and a patriotic wave, there was also a mega performance by Carnival King in the National Song Competition, TR Shine. Also addressing the gathering were Bishop of the Anglican Diocese, the Right Reverend Phillip Wright, Principal Requeña and a former graduate of the school, Aldo Reyes, who was the keynote speaker at the festivities.

“It is our effort to get our students to understand that they are Belizeans and they need to be proud of that fact. Like I said, it happens every year and so we start our planning from very early on; get our students, get the band ready. We have our board who expect that this event takes place. So it is a collaborative effort among the teachers, the parents the students because as you see in our audience we do have parents that we invite to this event. It is the students that do a lot for this day because they spent countless hours after school preparing themselves to get ready to perform for their peers and for their parents and to show that as students of ACC, they are proud to be here, they are brought to be Belizeans and they want to put their best foot forward.”

“It’s a great privilege to be invited to speak. I was all too glad to accept. I mean this place holds a lot of great memories for me and it is a place that set the foundation to where I am now. So I am very grateful for it.”

Duane Moody

“What advice would you have for these youths to be successful in life, finishing off school and aiming for their goals?”

Aldo Reyes

“Yes well that is a question I pondered when I was preparing my speech and I try to focus on three points really in my speech. The first is to emphasize how special of a place we have here in Belize in terms of our people and actual land. I want them to appreciate that we truly live in a very blessed place. The other two points is emphasizing the importance of education. The other point that I tried to touch on which is very important is to have them to try to stay away from the bad elements in society; to try to walk the straight and narrow and try to not be influenced by the bad elements of society because it is really not worth it. There is no future in that life.”
