Convicted soldier turns himself in to authorities
A B.D.F. solider sentenced this week in absentia for ammunition offences has turned himself in to authorities. Former Belize Defence Force soldier, thirty-seven year old Eloy Hemmans was thought to have fled the country after he failed to appear in Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to face a charge of prohibited ammunition. Hemmans was found guilty by Chief Magistrate Herbert Lord and sentenced to three years in jail. However, sometime today he handed himself in to the court and tonight is behind bars at the Hattieville prison. The charge against Hemmans arose out of an incident which occurred on October sixteenth 2004 when a searched of his home by police turned up nine 7.62 rounds in a drawer.
