Sporting Highlights with James Adderley
Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.
To get some action over the weekend, we had to head West to San Ignacio Saturday night where the Cayo 1st Division Football Competition featured the mighty clash between Lower Dover of Unitedville and the home team Quintas. We’re some 10 minutes in when Cyril Simpson mounts this forcey into the Lower Dover defensive box and is tackled by Brandon Martinez who might have inadvertently hand the ball to make the referee point to the penalty spot. Cyril Simpson gets the call and he finds the far corner to beat goalkeeper Wilson Aguirre for the 1-zip Quinta’s lead. 3 minutes later, Simpson pats this nice roller to hook up with Brandon Canto who raises it over Aguirre’s outstretched hands for the 2-zip lead.
Folks, offensively Lower Dover was missing in action. This is a perfect pass from Gilbert Wade to Marvin Budna and he just squanders the opportunity with the high risk knee attempt. To make matters worse, Wilson Aguirre botches this routine save when Jeffrey Carrillo raises this ball at goal and it becomes a 3-nil score. So we go to second half and the visitors defence gets in each other’s way to give possession to the home team and its only the near upright Eric Cano on this open look at goal. Cano then tries for a goal off this set piece but is denied by Wilson Aguirre. Meanwhile, this defensive miscue gives Darren Myvette a shot at Quinta’s goal. The keeper, Oscar Kus, can’t hold on to the ball which rebounds to Gilbert Wade and he gets Lower Dover on the scoreboard. Lower Dover looks to get back into the ballgame off this corner kick but two overeager players get in each other’s way. Quinta’s San Ignacio would go on to post the 4-1 big win.
Play in the Cayo 1st Division Season continues on Friday on 26th September when Universal Hardware takes on Lower Dover and on Saturday FRITA Succotz battles Westrac and Adventures FC faces Hill View.
In women’s play, the President Cup resumes this Sunday with Dangriga Pumas travelling to Toledo Strikers while Smart Millennium will host Suga City Girls at Ladyville Field.
Turning to the table Tennis scene, the BES Auditorium was transformed into a frenzy of action on Saturday as the 6th annual Team League Brother’s Habet Tournament reigned supreme. Dozens of top notch players brought out their A-game in an effort to push their team to the top. In Division one play, Hurricane blew past Brodies Ping Pong in an exciting 5 to 4 finish that saw hector Lopez, Carlos Cui and Sen Sen got the better of Kareem Michael, Yasser Musa and Tyronne Tun. Sugar City’s Toni Lui, Mandy Gomez and Leo Carballo rolled over Bryton Codd, Trevon Brown and Zachary Garbutt of Racqueteers for the 5-3 victory while Spin Kings Steve Flowers, Charlton Roches and Clifton Williams were too for Turds Jarid Thompson, Raymond Woods and Wayne Eiley stopping the set in a 3-1 blast.
In Division 3 action, Racqueteers scorched SJC Young Warriors 5 to 4, Brodies Killer Spin smashed SJC Wildcats 5 to 1 and Reppers got the no contest from Young stars. Stay tuned as the tournament rolls on.
Jah over all, I’m James Adderley.
