Cayo landfill gets attention
In a follow-up to a story aired on last night’s newscast regarding the state of the land fill on the Western Highway between San Ignacio and Benque Viejo, this afternoon we were informed that heavy works equipment will be in the area tomorrow morning to clear the access road and prepare new cells for garbage dumping. According to Chairman of the National Solid Waste Management Authority, Belize City Mayor Dave Fonseca, the garbage dump is the joint responsibility of both town councils, but despite technical assistance from the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Tourism, the dump has deteriorated to its present deplorable condition. In response, a group of concerned citizens have formed a management committee to oversee the area and ensure that the situation is not left to fester. When we visited the area on Tuesday, the garbage was threatening to overflow onto the Western Highway.
