Duo Walk on Attempted Murder Charge
On October sixteenth, 2012, two south side youths were the target of street violence when they were shot at on Mopan Street in Belize City. The duo, Ellis Meighan Junior and the then seventeen year old Malik Dixon, whose father was killed days prior to shooting, survived the incident. Police later arrested and charged two city youths who are well known to the courts. Jeon Peebles and Akeem Smith were jointly charged with two counts of attempted murder. But tonight, Pebbles and Smith are free of the indictable offenses after Meighan Junior and Dixon appeared in the court room of Senior Magistrate Sharon Fraser this morning and requested no further court action in the matter.
In light of what they had to say, Senior Magistrate Fraser dismissed the charge of attempted murder and they were free to go. In the incident, two years ago, the duo was travelling in Meighan’s vehicle, when at the Mopan Street intersection, two men standing on the corner, opened fire on the vehicle. Dixon was shot in the right lower back and was rushed to the K.H.M.H., where he received treatment. Days later, Peebles was arraigned with two counts of Attempted Murder, Use of Deadly Means of Harm, Dangerous Harm, and Grievous Harm. Police later detained and charged Smith for the same offenses. Smith was charged some years ago for the grenade murder of Darren Trapp in Mayflower Street.
