Will Compensation Be Extended to Yanie Cu?

Twenty-eight year old Yanie Cu was badly injured when a vehicle being driven by Deputy Commissioner of Police Miguel Segura slammed into his taxi on August sixteenth. Today, he cannot walk, his hip is crushed and his arm is held together by metal pins. His family is forced to beg for financial assistance to care for him. But they are angry because they say Segura should help. And since he was driving an official government vehicle when the accident occurred they think the Ministry of National Security should help. And it might. Today, C.E.O. in that Ministry retired Colonel George Lovell told News Five that because of our story, it is something they are looking at.

“Not if the driver insists that he is not liable and if he is insisting that, then the court decides and we will have to wait until the court makes that decision. But what can be considered, I think we would need to look at it, now that you are raising this issue is to see if something can be done sort of ex gratia where it’s done without any sort of commitment on our side of payment liability or accepting liability.”

“Sir is that the situation that Mister Segura is claiming that he has no fault in this accident?”

“Yes, that is my understanding. And the thing is government vehicles are insured third party and when you have third party insurance, the insurance would not necessarily release any money unless the driver accepts liability. And so that’s where we are with that particular case with Deputy Commissioner Segura.”

“We could look at that now. Now that you are mentioning it, I would raise the matter with my minister and to see if this is something that they would want to consider. Obviously I would have to speak with the SOLGEN office to see if it is something that we can consider. I know that in cases where government has commit outside the conclusion of cases, they would do so in the form of ex gratia payments; that’s from my own knowledge.”
