Football, Volleyball, Billiards and Cycling in Sporting Activities

The crucial matchup between Police United and the Belize Defence Force took center force inside the People Stadium yesterday as the intense rivalry continues unabated. The B.D.F. immediately look to get things going off this set piece triggered by Vallan Symms who picks out Leon Cadle but the header is handled by goalkeeper Keith Allen. The B.D.F. remains in control of the action as Ismar Duran and Carlton Thomas play to 2 man game that releases Thomas for this left foot floater that rises over the woodwork. The Police finally look dangerous when Amin August Jr. works his way through traffic to fire this left that forces Kevin Gamboa to come up with a scrambling save which rebounds to Trevor Leman who fails on the follow up. It’s more police action when Kafu Roches centers into the lot but Franz Vernon botches the header and at the half we have a scoreless ballgame. We’re into 2nd half play when Harrison Tasher sets table for Carlton Thomas who should’ve done better with this look. Andrew Allen then fixes bomb at goal only to see it inch over the crossbar. Leon Cadle gets his turn to open the scoreboard, so he looks for the fix corner and misses the target. It’s Vallan Symms looking to give the lead to the B.D.F. off the set piece but again fails to get the job done as the ballgame conclude into a scoreless draw. Truth is people neither team did enough to claim this ballgame.
In other action around the league Belmopan Bandits bombed San Ignacio United in a 7 – zip blast and Placencia Tex Mar Assassins scorched FC Belize 1 – zip while Verdes pounded Paradise Freedom Fighters 2 – nil. Thus the standings looks like this B.D.F. leads with 10 points, Verdes FC also has 10, Placencia 7, Police United 6, Bandits 4, Waguya 4, FC Belize 3 while both Paradise Freedom Fighters and San Ignacio are winless and without a point after both team lost all 4 matches apiece.
Turning to the Billiards scene Erwin Woodeye walked through Ernest Rowland, Elder Paredes and Marvin Yam in the semi-finals of the King of the Hills 8 Ball Tournament to take the overall title. 32 players started in the tournament that tested 32 players.
Turning to the cycling scene, Dangriga takes center stage with the presentation of the annual TV Ramos Cycling Classic. The Elite and weekend warriors A & B Class cover 56 miles while the WW C Class, the Masters and the Amateurs rides will do 40 miles.
Turning to the volleyball scene, the National Secondary Schools Sporting Association and Bowen Volleyball Championship was staged at the Orange Walk Sports Complex on the 7th and 8th November featuring 4 female and 4 male champions from each district. The female championship match found 8 time champion St. Catherine’s Academy looking for a 9 straight title focusing on Belmopan Comprehensive High. The defending champions routed Belmopan in the 1st set when Karina Bernard serves up this ball for a rally that concludes when Juel Lewis smashes it across and Belmopan cannot come up with the dig as SCA wins the 1st set 25 – 8. Belmopan had a better outing in the 2nd set – Aliyaah Allen places this serve perfectly to pick up the point and then off her serve Kiwaina Sebastian tries her smash but ___ Clare takes care of that and Kayleen Flowers makes them pay. However the 8 time champ dug in down the stretch and when Kiara could not return this ball SCA takes the 2nd 25 – 20. St. Catherine’s returned to for, in the 3rd set. Juel Lewis handles this serve to find Karen Quan who set up Kiwana Sebastian and she finishes off the action for the 25 -0 8 score. SCA takes the title in 3 straight for their 9th consecutive championship and we say congratulations to Lupita Quan and company. We also say good show to female MVP Mya Musa of SCA. On the male side the Toledo Community College beat San Pedro High School 26 – 24, 25-15, 24-26 and 28 – 26 in 4 sets to claim this year’s National Male title and we say good job to Julio Requena of TCC who emerged with the MVP honor.
