Plague of holdups returns to Hummingbird Highway

Holdups on the Hummingbird Highway have ranged from one man brandishing a machete… to multiple gunmen using guerrilla tactics. About a year ago police thought they had broken up the most active band of robbers, but in the last month residents say motorists frequenting the road have once again become easy targets for a group of armed bandits who ambush their prey around curves or near bridges. No one has been injured in the most recent attacks, but reports to News Five are that at least four vehicles have been hit in the area between miles twenty-one and twenty four. This morning Police Press Officer G. Michael Reid confirmed that two Bowen and Bowen trucks were jacked in the same vicinity and cash taken. Quality Poultry Dangriga branch manager Kevin Boehmer also reports that one of their delivery trucks was robbed while at the tamales shop by three men: one armed with a gun, the other two with machetes. The salesman handed over the money pouch and the thieves left without hurting anyone. The latest incident is said to have occurred on Sunday, but no official reports have been filed with the police. Authorities say they will increase patrols along the Hummingbird Highway. If you have any information that may assist in the investigation, please contact the nearest police station or call 0-800-922-TIPS.
