A Look Back at Garifuna Settlement Day
Garifuna Settlement Day festivities were held across the country on Wednesday, the largest celebration taking place in Culture Capital, Dangriga. In Belize City, the annual re-enactment of the arrival of the Garinagu to the shores of Belize culminated at the foot of the BelCan Bridge, where a delegation of men and women disembarked and sought permission from Mayor Darrell Bradley to settle in the country. Yurumein, as it is formally known, was followed by a spirited procession to St. Martin’s Church where a Mass of Thanksgiving was held. Despite the inclement weather which has affected most of the country since Saturday, scores of revelers later descended on the ITVET where food and drinks were in abundance, as well as music and dance. Here’s a snippet of the activities.
