Former OW Mayor Passes Away
Orange Walk’s first and only female Mayor to date, Agripina Espejo, passed away in Belize City on Wednesday afternoon. Espejo had served as the United Democratic Party’s Mayor from 1994 to 1995, and also for a portion of 1997. Today News Five spoke to Orange Walk’s current Mayor, Kevin Bernard, who remembered her as a stalwart of the community whose good works transcended political lines.

“It is sad to report indeed that Miss Agripina Espejo, a former mayor of Orange Walk town…she was the only elected female mayor in Orange Walk and I think she was one of the second mayor in the entire country. I could recall when we inaugurated our mural sometime back in 2013, she was here to receive her award where we recognized all the former mayors for their past contributions to the community. Having known Miss Agripina, I personally can say that she was a very humble lady; she was somebody respected in the community and she has always cared for the people of Orange Walk. One of her main thing was to ensure that Orange Walk was always clean and beautiful. While Miss Pinita served as a U.D.P. mayor, Miss Pinita always looked beyond political lines. She was a very decent woman, cared for her community and her people and served her community well. I know she served as mayor between 1994-1995 and I think she also served a portion of 1997. All I can say is that I want to express, on behalf of the Orange Walk Town Council, our deepest condolences to the family of the late Misses Pinita. Miss Pinta has left her record of being a very humble lady, a lady of elegance.”
