P.M. calls for national unity on Independence Day
As part of traditional Independence Day activities on Wednesday, official ceremonies held at the Memorial Park in Belize City included addresses to the nation from community leaders. In his speech, Prime Minister Said Musa spoke of development through national unity.
Prime Minister Said Musa
“We are Belize. We are linked in so many ways. When a hurricane strikes, we are all affected. When crime rears its ugly head, the fabric of the nation is torn. When the oil price escalates, it harms the national economy and all feel the pain. And when HIV/AIDS or any other pandemic disease spreads, whole communities are threatened. When there is environmental degradation, climate change, drought, rising sea levels, acts of terrorism or war, our whole world suffers. More positively, we are linked by our common humanity and united in an historic undertaking to improve the human condition of all Belizeans.”
“And so my fellow Belizeans, let our independence be reflected in the creation of confidence in one another and a caring for one another rather than in crusades of doubt and suspicion driven by irrational hate and distrust. Let us prove to the world that in Belize, we believe in democracy because it releases the energy of every citizen. And let us channel this energy for the good of our beautiful Belize.”
