St. Mary’s students promote their heritage
The schedule of special September events is heavy and culminates tonight and tomorrow with the traditional Independence Day festivities. And while the public enjoys these weeks of celebration, the schools are also getting involved… as News Five’s Jacqueline Woods found out this afternoon.

Today the students of St. Mary’s School took a break from regular classes to share with parents and fellow students their efforts on Heritage Day, an event held every year at the school to observe the September celebrations.

“It’s very important because since we at the school found out that they use this building, it is a historical building they use it first for the adult human suffrage in 1954, so we try to bring that back and remind the kids of our history.”
“Most of us worked hard. For my group, the standard three group, we did a dance and we focus mostly on the Creole. And we bring back all those antique iron, the bowl that you use to knead the bread in, the tortilla, and we did a dance, a wonderful dance and the other class did poetry and folklore. So we try to bring everything up to Creole so everybody volunteer. Other groups did different selection of dance, poem, even the standard six class did a presentation of the 1981 Independence when we first had Independence, which was a great show. So it was a lot of hard work.”
The students had fun, but the boys and girls also knew that they had to work hard as the work will be graded. Jacqueline Woods for News Five.
