Various Sectors to Benefit from Taiwan…

Since arriving on a working visit to Belize on December eleventh, Taiwanese Foreign Minister David Lin has had a busy schedule which included the conferral of the Order of Distinction of Belize on Friday. Later that afternoon, Minister Lin was also present for a groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of a new headquarters for Belize’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The building will be funded by Taiwan as part of ongoing assistance to strengthen Belize’s foreign ministry. While Belize has benefited tremendously in other areas such as education and agriculture, Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington says that the health sector will also receive financial and technical support from Taiwan.

“We benefit from the joint programs which they do in terms of training, for example, is provided for our people. We have an ongoing security program providing, training, providing equipment and materials to our soldiers. You know, we have tremendous amounts of scholarships that are given each year for our students to go and study. They are particularly strong in helping the Minister of Foreign Affairs, every year we get in excess of a million dollars U.S. to help to strengthen the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Belize. They have been giving us funding to build our headquarters and they sent people on training. That is the kind of area that we get assistance in, programs to develop women and to make the situation for them more equal and tolerable. Health sector, tremendous assistance in terms of our health sector.”

“We will continue our efforts in helping our friend in Belize on your way up to further development. Taiwan would like to share what we have, in terms of experience, expertise and also we’d like to see more cooperation in all areas where we can see mutual benefits.”
Minister Lin is scheduled to inspect the ICT Project in Belmopan on Tuesday before leaving the country.
