Musical trio visiting from Mexico
As part of their Independence Day celebrations in Belize, the Mexican Institute of Culture has brought in a very special musical group from Mexico City. The Eblen Macari Trio will give two free performances: one tonight in Belize City and the other tomorrow in Belmopan. News Five spoke with the members of the group about their songs, which blends the sounds of the East with the music of Mexico.
Eblen Macari Sr., Dir, Eblen Macari Trio
“We have our Mexican roots, we have our Arabian roots, and we do this work for Mexico. It’s percussion, woodwinds and guitar with our own music.”
Jesus Cuevas, Member, Eblen Macari Trio
“It’s our original music. We have music with several influences, but Middle Eastern or Eastern music. I play instruments from Armenia, China, bagpipes from Bulgaria, and we mix all together with Mexican music. We are not playing traditional Mexican music, we are not playing Mariachi, we are not playing Mexican trio. We are playing our music, it’s our stuff, our project, but I am sure the people will like it. We have sounds that maybe you have never heard at other times.”
Eblen Macari Jr., Eblen Macari Trio
“I play Jambay, it’s an African drum. And yes, I heard some Belizean music, it’s Andy Palacio and I really like him, it’s great. I love the music and the beat.”
You can catch the Eblen Macari Trio tonight at the Mexican Friendship Fair at the Memorial Park in Belize City. The group is scheduled to perform at seven p.m. On Saturday night they will be at the George Price Centre in Belmopan. That show starts at six.
