National basketballers face Mexican teams
Sports action this weekend will also feature the women of the Belize National Female Basketball team as they participate in a triangular tournament. The event will include champion teams: Los Hurricanes out of Cancun and Yade from Merida. This morning organisers told News Five that after competing in a similar tournament in Mexico two months ago, this local competition was initiated to promote cross border unity. But while the next three days will be fun and games, All-Star Tracy Garnett told us this afternoon that when the whistle blows at centre court, the heat is on.
Tracy Garnett, Belize National Basketball Team
“From what I’ve experienced over there it will not be an easy game. They are very competitive, they are fast, and they are very good teams. So what we will need to do is to play defence of course, to keep up with momentum of game… and may the best team win. That’s all I can say about that.”
Janelle Chanona
“I know fans support does have a role, what do you say to the Belizean public?”
Tracy Garnett
“Well I would really love them to come out and support us and just for be there for us and we will try our best in winning this game.”
In addition to Garnett, the Belizean line-up includes Enid Dakers, Shelmadine Cacho, Denise Streete, Sylvia Clarke, Melanie Tasher, Erlet Reynolds, and Tifara Swift. Game one takes place tonight at the Belize City Centre starting at eight.
