Attorney requests bail in murder case
In another case before the Supreme Court, the lawyer for a man accused of murder has taken the unprecedented step of requesting bail for his client. On Thursday, attorney Marcel Cardona asked that bail be granted to B.D.F. Corporal Remijio Canul charged for the death of Marin Adolphus in 2001. Although the death occurred several years ago, Canul was not arrested until this past July. Two other men, David Westby and Ricardo Westby, were also arrested. Cardona told the court that his client is ill and that the matter has already been set for November. He also pointed out that in other Caribbean Commonwealth Countries such as Antigua and the Bahamas, bail is granted to those charged with murder. Cardona also asked for a one-week adjournment to consult with the Director of Public Prosecutions in order to properly reply to the court regarding the possibility of lessening the charges to manslaughter. The case is a strange one in that Adolphus’ death occurred during an altercation at a bar in Orange Walk when he fell on broken glass, cut his knees, and bled to death on the way to the Orange Walk hospital.
